One of the most challenges faced by children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is their dental needs. Due to their high levels of anxiety and lack of cooperation, in most cases, dentists cannot effectively treat these patients. Consequently, these children are deprived of dental services or may require general anesthesia for their urgent dental procedures, imposing significant financial burdens on their families. This research aims to predict children's cooperation based on their anxiety, while examining the mediating role of maternal stress in children with autism during dental interventions. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Gilan University of Medical Sciences (IR.IAU.LIAU.REC.1401.013), 2023. It was conducted on 32 children with mild or medium autism level ,who were referred to Dr. Arash Ebrahimi's dental clinic located in Dana Building, Golsar cross, Rasht, Iran. The tools used in this research were the Spence Anxiety Questionnaire (1999) and the Franklin Behavior Questionnaire (1962). The inclusion criteria were 3- to 6-year-old children with autism residing in Rasht or suburb area and parental consent for participation in the study was obtained. The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS version 24, with a significance level of 0.05, employing Spearman correlation coefficient and regression analysis. The results indicated a significant relationship (p < 0.05) between the research variables. Thus, based on the findings of this study, children with autism spectrum disorder whose parents have high levels of anxiety are more likely to exhibit non-cooperative behaviors in the dental environment and while receiving dental services.
