The Effectiveness of Emotion-Focused Couple Therapy on Marital Commitment, Love Schemas, And Emotional Schemas in Couples with Extramarital Relationships

Abstract

Aim: The purpose of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of couple therapy focused on emotion on marital commitment, love schemas, and emotional schemas in couples with extramarital relationships. Methods: In this research, a single-case quasi-experimental design of multiple baseline types was used. The statistical population of this research included all couples with experience in extramarital relations who were referred to the family courts and prevention unit of the Dezful City welfare department in 2021-22. 4 couples (8 people) were selected based on available targeted sampling. The emotion-focused couple therapy process was implemented in three stages at the baseline, during 8 sessions of 90 minutes, and with a two-month follow-up. participants, to the Marital Commitment Questionnaire of Adams and Jones (1997); Yarmohammadi Wasel et al. love schema questionnaire (2009), and Leahy Emotional Schema Scale (LES) (2002) responded. The data were analyzed by visual drawing method, stable change index, and recovery percentage formula. Results: The results of the research showed that couple therapy focused on excitement increased marital commitment in couples with extramarital relationships (p<0.05) and its results continued until the follow-up stage. In addition, the results showed that couple therapy focused on emotion increased adaptive emotional schemas and decreased maladaptive emotional schemas of couples with extramarital relationships. (p<0.05), emotion-focused couple therapy has a significant effect on secure love schema, unstable love schema, clingy love schema, avoidant love schema, and non-serious love schema (p<0.05) and its results continued until the follow-up stage. In addition, the results showed that couple therapy focused on excitement did not have a significant effect on the reduction of non-serious love schema and disinterested love schema. (p<0.05). Conclusion: Therefore, couple therapy focused on emotion as a sustainable intervention to increase marital commitment, love schemas, and emotional schemas can be used in health and treatment centers for couples with extramarital relationships.
